So early this morning, or very late last night, whatever the case  might be, my story on the Charter Oak game was posted on the Tribune Web Site. As I sat there in the newsroom following the game, amidst the chaos that is friday night deadline, I was happy to be back in the fold. Week one is in the books folks!!

COVINA – Travis Santiago threw for three touchdowns and the Charter Oak High School defense scored on an interception return as the Chargers rebounded from a season-opening loss with a 34-7 win over Gardena in a nonleague game Friday night.

The Chargers, 1-1, overcame early errors, including two lost fumbles as Santiago connected with senior receiver Dennis Rufus and wideout Chris Gilcrest for touchdowns of 61, 72 and 21 yards.

The Panthers, 0-2, were victimized by costly mistakes last week in a 36-7 loss to El Camino of Oceanside. This week against Charter Oak, they lost three fumbles on their way to another loss.

The Chargers jumped to a 17-0 halftime lead after Santiago’s first touchdown pass to Rufus in the first quarter, an interception return for a 40-yard score and a 42-yard field goal by Jack Schneider.

“What happened this week is we got a little bit better,” Coach Lou Farrar said. “We’re still very young. We’re still learning to play as a group.”

Gardena quarterback William Benson completed 5 of 20 passes for 66 yards, but most of the yards came on a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Britton with 4 seconds to go in the game.
