GLENDORA – Azusa Pacific University quarterback John van den Raadt tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another, helping the Cougars extend their winning streak over La Verne in a 59-14 nonconference game at Citrus College on Saturday night.

With the lopsided victory, the Cougars have now won nine consecutive over the Leopards dating back to 1994.

Van den Raadt went 9 of 13 for 200 yards and the three scores of 34, 62 and 54 yards and he also did damage to La Verne with his legs, rushing for another 56-yard score.

Azusa Pacific coach Victor Santa Cruz said he was happy about the team’s offensive balance, but he still expects his team to continue growing.

“Every week you base your plan offensively on what they (the defense) are giving us. This week they committed to take away the run,” he said.

“Our challenge to our group is I want to turn on film and see our best effort. I wanna grow every single week, Santa Cruz added, while taking time to praise La Verne.

“That was a good effort on their part, they are very improved defensively,” he said.

After scoring 17 points in the first half, the Cougars came back with 28 unanswered points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Unlike last week, when Van den Raadt and Johnell Murphy combined for nearly 500 yards of offense, the quarterback shared the wealth, throwing to Aaron Wall, Ryan Chamberlin and Matt Davis.

Josh Ross threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Matt Griffin, and running back Erek Brown broke off a 41-yard scoring run for La Verne in the losing effort.
