Welcome back to the blog sports fans. Yesterday I visited Damien High school’s football practice in anticipation of covering friday night’s week 2 contest between the Spartans and Chaffey.

As Tribune staff writer Aram Tolegian pointed out in his pre-season analysis of the team, the Spartans may have a tougher road to follow than they did last season, given a lot of the new talent on the team. Even though Head Coach Greg Gano brought four CIF championship rings to Damien’s program when he took over back in ’09, an infusion of new faces and a reshuffling of leagues (with Charter Oak and South Hills joining the Sierra League this season) will make it a challenging journey for the upstart Spartans.

Still, Damien has already overcome a tough early test with a come from behind victory over the Diamond Ranch Panthers last week, in a game in which they scored 19 consecutive points in the 4th quarter to secure the win at Ganesha High. James Ramirez, David Griffith and Daniel Covarrubias all played significant roles in the win and figure to be featured prominently again this week.

Gano seemed to have the team well prepared, running drills and practicing formations in the hot September afternoon. It should make for quite a game this week as they look to improve on their 5-6 record from last year and make it into the playoffs of the competitive Inland Division.
