SAN DIMAS – A week after scoring 19 fourth-quarter points in a come-from-behind win, Damien High School was in control the entire night in a 35-0 shutout of Chaffey in a nonleague game Friday night.

Quarterback Enrique Zaldivar threw touchdown passes of 39 and 12 yards and multiple players combined for three scores on the ground.

“It’s a big win for us, but it just means we have a long way to go,” Damien head coach Greg Gano said. “There is a tough road ahead of us.

Gano said his defense played great and the Spartans were happy to find new weapons on offense.

Unlike last week’s contest against Diamond Ranch where the Spartans (2-0) came back to win late, Damien secured a 21-point halftime advantage with touchdown runs from Andrew Aguirre, Jalen Castille and Daniel Covarrubias.

Despite Zaldivar going just 3 for 11 for 31 yards in the half, the Spartans combined for 155 yards of offense and the three touchdowns.

Zaldivar came alive in the second half, connecting with James Ramirez and Aguirre on scoring plays. He finished 8 of 17 for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tigers (1-1) relied mostly on the rushing duo of Julian Bernadino and Carnell Spencer, who last week combined for 400 yards and five touchdowns to lead Chaffey to a victory against Alta Loma.

This week, the duo was limited to 177 yards rushing and no touchdowns.
