SAN DIMAS – A week after being routed by Covina, El Monte High School rebounded with a 32-24 nonleague victory over Gladstone on Thursday at San Dimas High.

Both teams were winless going into the game, but the Lions benefitted from a strong performance from senior running back Michael Jimenez, who had 32 carries for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and Frank Lopez, who finished with more than 100 yards in kick returns and scored a touchdown.

The Lions took an early 6-3 lead and then made it a 12-3 advantage at halftime on an unusual play in which a pass from quarterback Manuel Santa Cruz bounced off one wide receiver and was caught by another, Nemo Silva, who scored on a 47-yard scoring play.

The Gladiators battled back with 21 second-half points, including a 61-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andres Uribe.

Uribe finished with two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as miscues and penalties thwarted Gladstone’s bid for a victory.

El Monte coach Joel Sanchez said the victory was important for his team.

“We’ve been trying to get over the hump this season,” he said, “and today in the fourth quarter we were the team that wanted it more.”

Sanchez praised the Gladiators’ play.

“You gotta give credit to their quarterback,” he said. “They didn’t give up, they just kept coming back. We ran the ball well in the second half.”
