GLENDORA – If Citrus College’s clash with the state’s No. 2-ranked team, Bakersfield, was a litmus test of the Owls’ progress this season, then their 54-6 loss on Saturday night showed the team has a lot of work still to do.

The Owls (1-2), ranked No. 19 going into the game, had scoring opportunities in the first half but never managed to find their way into the end zone.

After scoring an early field goal, the Owls fell behind 17-6 by halftime and never seemed to find a rhythm on offense.

In contrast, the Renegades (4-0) scored touchdowns on consecutive possessions in the second quarter, a 3-yard run by Ju Dean-Johnson followed by a 43-yard reception by Leandre West from Lyle Negron.

Citrus coach Ron Ponciano said after the game his team needed to work on all the fundamentals.

“Right now (we need work on) everything. We don’t pass well, we don’t block well, we don’t kick the ball well,” he said. “That team (Bakersfield) has gotten better every day and we have not.”

The Renegades went on to score 37 consecutive points in the second half and also harassed Citrus quarterbacks Blake Loncar and backup Lance Karl throughout the evening by racking up seven sacks.

One positive for the Owls was the play of running back Brando Stansell, who finished with 101 yards on 18 carries.

Bakersfield coach Jeff Chudy praised Stansell.

“He made us miss, he’s a dynamic player,” Chudy said.
