HACIENDA HEIGHTS – Wilson High School utilized its ground game, with senior running back Moses Vega the difference maker in the Wildcats’ nonleague home victory over El Monte on Friday night.

Vega had 20 carries for 145 yards and touchdowns of 13 and 32 yards in the victory over the Lions (1-3).

Wildcats (3-1) quarterback Josh Morales went 13 of 20 for 131 yards and one interception, and the Wildcats’ defense recovered a fumble as Wilson jumped to a 16-6 halftime advantage.

The Lions relied on a running weapon of their own, senior running back Michael Jimenez. Jimenez contributed to El Monte’s 32-24 victory over Gladstone last week, but Wilson limited him to 55 yards in the first half Friday night.

Jimenez eventually found the end zone on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Manuel Santa Cruz before the end of the half, but didn’t score in the second.

The Lions were also victimized by four turnovers and a safety.
