LA PUENTE – La Puente overcame two early turnovers and scored 21 consecutive points in the first half en route to a 41-6 victory over Bassett in Montview League play Friday night. The host Warriors (7-2, 5-1) were led by quarterback Ivan Vasquez, who threw touchdowns of 1 and 38 yards, and by running back Nicholas Barrientos, who rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries (an 11-yard average) and scored on runs of 2 and 49 yards.

Vasquez finished 17 of 23 for 160 yards and an interception.

The Olympians (3-6, 2-4) lost 21-6 to Gladstone last week after falling behind early by two scores, but never were in Friday’s game.

After spotting the visiting Warriors three touchdowns in the first half, Bassett finally scored midway through the third quarter on a 12-yard run by Michael Pena.

The Warriors held Pena, Bassett’s leading ground gainer, to 93 yards and the lone touchdown on just 14 carries.

“We played a little sloppy, we had a couple of turnovers, but the kids worked hard and practiced all week and it paid off,” La Puente coach Brandon Rohrer said.

“We just need to win one more and we’ll be in the playoffs,” Rohrer continued.

“We’re excited about that.”
